By William Inge
Directed by Lester Thomas Shane

William Inge's masterpiece of American drama is set in a small Kansas town in the early 1950's. On Labor Day, a sexy drifter, Hal Carter, arrives in search of his old college friend, Alan Seymour, whom he hopes to hit up for work.  Hal finds some day labor with Helen Potts, a widow who shares a back yard with another widow, Flo Owens, whose daughter, Madge, is one of the most beautiful young women in town. Coincidentally, Madge is dating Alan; the connections and collisions are inevitable. Renting a room in the Owens house is Rosemary, a self-described, old-maid schoolteacher, who is dating Howard, a local businessman. Hal's raw sensuality arouses passions, dreams, and unconscious desires in everyone as they prepare for the towns Labor Day picnic.  All are forced to confront life choices on the cusp of autumn under a full Harvest Moon. The results are powerfully moving, surprisingly dramatic, and ultimately life affirming. Picnic won both the Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Awards. It was made into an Oscar-winning film starring Kim Novak and William Holden.
